These days some budgeting is taught in schools but older generations did not get this and so unless their parents taught them, there was no way that they would know.

Where to Learn

Your bank statements should have most of the information that you need, which you may be able to access online if you have online banking or you may get in the post. The reason for this is that you need to note how much money you have coming in and how much you spend in a typical week or month, depending on whether you get paid weekly or monthly.

Tracking Spending

It is important to have an understanding of what things are essential to spend out on and which are not. You will need to pay taxes, loan repayments, rent/mortgage, contracts, utility bills, food and transport to school/college /work, for example. However, things like clothing, gifts, eating out, alcohol, days out, holidays, homewares and other items that you can manage without would be considered to be luxuries and so do not need to be bought. Each of us has different requirements with regards to the things that we need and the things that we want. Therefore we all need to look our own circumstances and work out what things we must spend our money on and check if we firstly have enough money to do that. If we do, then we will be able to budget the rest so that we can buy a certain amount of luxury goods without overspending. It is when we do not have enough to even cover the necessities that things can seem rather bleak.

However, it can be possible to find ways to make more money available. This could be by switching providers, suppliers and retailers and comparing all process so that you are not paying more than necessary. It can be easy to think that brands that you associate with being cheap such as a budget supermarket or pound shop will always be the cheapest for everything but actually, you could find that the items in there are smaller and therefore you get less for your money or simply they are just available cheaper elsewhere, so it is worth really looking around carefully to check.

Increasing Income

If this still does not help then you will need to think of ways to increase your income. This can be easier for some people than others but it is possible for most people. It may be that you will need to find a job so that you can get more money coming in, work more hours or swap to a better paid job if you can. Doing questionnaires and other small tasks and these will not pay large amounts of money but if you have some spare time, they can be a good way to get a bit of extra income.
